Syrup Helsinki is a trendy and hip graphic design agency established in 2001 by Teemu Suviala and Antti Hinkula. As a designing-duo they have been very succesfull since the beginning by attaining high demanding customers worldwide. Syrup Helsinki has created visual concepts for many contexts ranging from, commercials, drink-cartons, campains and brochures only to mention a few. Teemu Suviala and Antti Hinkula won The Desing Forum Helsinki’s young designer of the year- award in 2005. Their clients include Amnesty International, Aprilia, Artek, City of Helsinki, Converse, Elämystaikurit, Escalator Records, Fazer, Film Magica, Finnish Cultural Foundation, Finnish National Theatre, General Electric, Huippu Design Management, Iittala, Image Publishing, Jim&Jill, Karhu, KOM theatre, Koneisto festival, Koko3, Konsthalle Helsinki, Leaf, Le Shop Stockholm, L'Oreal, MTV3, Nokia, Otava, Sampo Bank, Sanoma Magazines, Sokos Hotels, Sony, Stockmann, SubTV, Toyota, Trans Europe Express festival, Uniqlo, V&S, Valio, Vice magazine, Warner Records, WSOY, YLE, Yoko Deveraux.
Their most noticable designs are Valio’s Play 1 chocolate drink carton, a desing ontop of the Toyota Aygo, webdesign for General Electric, advertising campaign for V- magazine, Pony Ride- cd for The Crash and identity for Iittala’s 125th birthday.

Teemu Suviala was born in 1977 and got his degree in graphic design in 1996. His earliest designs were displayed in the cards he made for his parents and also has a history in comic book illustration which mainly have been self published ones. Antti Hinkula was born in 1976 and he idolises people who dare to try ”fresh” things not depending on what they do for a living. He met Teemu during their studies in the Design Institute of Lahti and both designers consider there is too much work to think about studies.

Teemu and Antti describe their work to be similar to music, filled and based on different kinds of rhythms and layers. To them, graphic design is like composing visuals. Contrasts and opposites make interior and graphic design interesting and the duo encourage people to place a bit of carboard box next to a designer sofa. Their work is colourful, playful and stimulating to the eye and imagination.

Janne Lax

Janne Lax is a footwear designer, who lives in Helsinki. His own shoe label is called St. Vacant, which means "pyhä vapaa-aika" in Finnish. It is quite a clever name.

In the early 90's, he got into the footwear business as a shoemaker. Janne Lax started to study 1999 and in 2002 he had got a degree in design. In 2005, Mr Lax started his own business, which included his own company called Lax Creation and his footwear company. In the same year his first son was born.

Janne gets his inspiration from music, science fiction and Helsinki. His goal is to make unique footwear. He does this by using new colour combinations and lines on the shoes, which haven't been seen in the "urban landscape" before. His St. Vacant shoes are made like leather shoes, even though they are trainers, so that they would form according to the shape of your foot. This makes them more comfortable.

St. Vacant products have been sold in Helsinki, Tampere and Barcelona. In the future Janne Lax would like to have a boutiques in Paris and London and also a few in Nordic countries.

Erja Hirvi

Tekstiilisuunnittelija Erja Hirvi on suunnittelut Marimekolle etupäässä painokuoseja vuodesta 1995 lähtien.

Erja Hirvi, miten sinusta tuli tekstiilisuunnittelija?

”Ideasta toteuttamiseen siirtyminen on itse asiassa vaikeinta, sillä piirtämisen aloittaminen on usein kankeaa.

Onko sinulla jokin tietty paikka, jossa mieluiten suunnittelet?

Mikä on suunnittelijan tärkein ominaisuus?
”Tärkeitä ominaisuuksia on monia. Hyvä yhdistelmä on nöyryys ja harkintakyky yhdistettynä leikkisyyteen ja ennakkoluulottomuuteen.”

Mihin käyttötarkoituksiin kankaasi parhaiten soveltuvat?
”Kannatan monipuolisuutta ja mielikuvitusta kankaiden käytössä. Toisin sanoen ne soveltuvat parhaiten juuri siihen, mihin käyttäjä on ne ajatellut.”

Millaista on suunnitella Marimekolle?

Mikä on parasta, tärkeintä työssäsi?

Millainen olet luonteeltasi?
”Olen herkästi innostuva, vaikkakin aika skeptinen. Olen lapsenmielinen rationalisti.”

Mistä unelmoit?
”Unelmoin puutarhoista, lomamökeistä, merenrannoista... Kukkien tuoksu on yksi asia, joka on viime aikoina hullaannuttanut minut täysin. Kukat ovat muutenkin hämmästyttäviä ja äärettömän kauniita.”

According to international studies, Finnish industry today is among the front rank for competitiveness: state-of-the-art information technology and high levels of innovation, combined with excellent research and education, create a strong competitive edge and a basis for industrial success now and in the future. In the 21st century, an increasingly important part of this overall competitiveness has been played by industrial design and the added value it confers: it is frequently what makes a product the first choice.

Before the Finns’ success at the Triennales, Alvar Aalto had been designing innovative furniture and new kinds of glassware since the 1930s, attracting attention in the international arena. His best-known products are his three-legged stool from 1933 and the Aalto vase from 1936. The company founded in 1935 to market the products, Artek, was a pioneer in modern home decoration. Artek’s mission was to bring everyday aesthetics into the home with a new breed of furniture to match the new lifestyle. A pronounced international influence was visible, not only in the products themselves but also in the fundamental concepts of the shop and company themselves. One important background eminence was Maire Gullichsen, who had also commissioned Alvar Aalto to design her home, Villa Mairea (1939).

The myth of Finnish design is often perceived as a heroic story of individual champions. In reality, many talented designers in various fields took part in building the modern Finland in the 50s and 60s. Practicality, closeness to everyday life, sparing use of materials and techniques, combined with innovative and perceptive design solutions were a collectively shared reality and a foundation of values in the industrial arts. Glass, ceramics, furniture, textiles and clothing all underwent a thoroughgoing revolution and found a form that was related to and which supported people’s new situation in life. Among the products of those days were the Domus chair (1946), the Kilta tableware set (since 1957), the Antti pan (1957), Muurame furniture (since 1955), Fiskars scissors (since1960), Marimekko’s dresses (since 1951) and knitwear (since 1968). These are all products linked with the spirit of the times and with new consumer needs. The design supported social change on its various levels: women’s equality, urban migration, and new forms of modern life.

In the early 1970s, new materials such as plastic and fibreglass brought greater malleability of form and brighter colours to design. The rounded lines and vivid colours of chairs by Yrjö Kukkapuro and Eero Aarnio conquered the world. However, the first energy crisis of the 1970s brought production of plastic chairs to a halt. Ergonomics and ecology became important criteria for design. In furniture of the 1980s, there was a return to an examination of wood’s attributes, different types of wood and combinations of wood and metal. Among those developing experimental furniture were Simo Heikkilä and Yrjö Wiherheimo as well as Kari Virtanen at Fiskars.

Design was seen in the 1970s and 80s as an important resource on the national level. An example is the opening of the Museum of Applied Arts (later called the Museum of Art and Design) in 1978, after many years of waiting, in new premises in Helsinki. In order to support international design promotion, the English-language magazine Form Function Finland was founded in 1980; today it is sent to more than 70 countries. Design Forum Finland was established in 1989 to promote design, particularly among companies. Today Design Forum Finland is maintained by the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design and has its own exhibition rooms and a shop in Helsinki city centre. The Museum of Art and Design changed its name to Designmuseo (The Finnish Museum of Art and Design) in 2002.

The reputation of Finnish design has also helped young designers with their internationalisation. The rise of the University of Art and Design to become one of Europe’s leading colleges of its kind has greatly supported this trend. Design Forum Finland has also made the work of young designers known through exhibitions and prizes both in Finland and abroad.

Of the fields which traditionally use industrial arts, the clothing industry has moved increasingly towards the designer trend in recent years. Ril´s – Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen, Marimekko’s Ritva Falla Collection, and Andiata are Finnish designer clothing ranges for adult women. Young clothing designers, such as Paola Suhonen’s IvanaHelsinki, have stimulated young people’s interest in Finnish clothing.

In recent years, Marimekko has made a strong comeback in interior design by reintroducing whole families of products from Maija Isola’s bold floral fabrics of the 1960s. Furniture design has not achieved the kind of growth attained by electronics, but strong brands including Avarte, Martela and Muurame as well as newcomers Inno, Mobel Original Design and Vivero have constantly upgraded their collections to make them competitive.

Design is important both culturally and in economic terms. Its cultural significance is in creating a national and individual identity. Design is also a part of the memory and history. The cheerful 1960s fabrics of Marimekko were a part of many Finns’ youth and their parents’ generation have cherished memories of meals on Kilta tableware. For the young people of today, Nokia’s mobile phones are everyday tools. In a broader perspective, Finland is known around the world for a handful of things: Alvar Aalto, Jean Sibelius, Finnish design, and nowadays also Nokia.

Parikan järjestyksessä toinen kevätmallisto on nimeltään Lomaromanssi. Malliston kengät ovat pirteän tyttömäisiä ja värikkäitä.

"Olen aina kolunnut kirppareita ja ihaillut 1930- ja 1940-luvun naisia. He olivat aina huoliteltuja päästä varpaisiin", Parikka sanoo.

Jukka Isotalo

Durat
Example of Durat
The idea behind Durat is to use recycled plastic to make nice-looking, long-lasting bath tubs, wash basins etc. It is a solid polyester based material used for custom made surfaces in public and private interiors. It contains recycled plastics and is itself 100% recyclable.
The sophistication of the Durat material lies in its soft feeling and the interesting appearance.
Durat is extremely durable and can be renewed by slight sanding. The material is very resistant to wear, humidity, and various kinds of chemicals.
Durat is produced in Finland's Turku, and the company was established in 1990. Its main principle is to unite design and recycling. The company collects plastic waste raw material in Scandinavia and turns it into high quality DURAT products using modern technology and flexible moulding systems.

The interesting thing about Durat is that it's completely seamless, and its durability adds to it's popularity.
Not only is Durat used in hotels and restaurants, but it's becoming more known in domestic use. The materials are colourful, and for instance a very nice change to the ordinary white bath tub.

Answer to maija_k: Syrup Helsinki is a graphic design agency made up of two people, Teemu and Antti. Personally, I can't say where they get their inspiration but I can only guess that because they are designers/artists, it varies all the time. Considering the wide range of customers the two of them have, they might get their inspiration from what it is they are commissioned to do and then take off from there. Otherwise, I think it is a matter that varies from one artist to another.

Questions to
emmi u-h: did Jukka Korpihete and Mikko Paakkanen win the prize together or separately?
nancy and robert: where are janne lax's shoes sold in (e.g. shops, boutiques)? anywhere hip and cool in hki?
sini: where did you find out about durat- sounds super ecological and space agey...

Finnish design should be more extravagant. Using designs from old buildings around the world. With designs from ancient chinese buildings, more old wooden buildings from the good ol' times in Finland. Rock buildings made with more regal and palace like designs. Getting the Feng Shui and Zen feeling. A great mixture, but not a collage or splatter of different styles. Getting the harmony of the building.

To be continued in the next epsisode of...

Finnish design is often too plain for my taste and I find it sad that designers don't use finnish nature as an inspiration as much as they should. It really is a shame in my opinion. For example a South African company Mustardseed and Moonshine design teacups, candles and bowls etc. based on a variety of flowers that can be found in their natural environment. the tea cups look exactly like the flowers they are modeled after and they are made by hand in many parts from a special moldable clay. I find them very different from any sort of table wear I have ever seen before. Every piece in their collection can also be machine washed which is handy and very out of the ordinary when talking about hand made artifacts. So what i really feel, is that finnish design is not ornamental enough. It is boring and plain, too simple to look beautiful in my eyes. I simply can not understand why it has to be that way, because we are surrounded by a unique nature which I believe could be very much used as inspiration for a new type of design.

Olavi Lindén claims that sculpturing is above all solving of practical problems and well planned accidents.

One of Olavi’s breakthroughs was the movable joint in the shrub scissors. This was a very useful detail for the grape fruit pickers in southern countries as it doesn’t strain on the working fingers.

Here is a link of the scissors and some other links as well:

Samu-Jussi Koski is a Finnish fashion designer who designed his first collection for Marimekko in the spring of 2005. Before that he worked as an assistant for Ritva Falla, another Marimekko designer. After graduating from a designer school in Lahti in 1998, he became a trainee at Marimekko.
Samu-Jussi Koski's designs are very different from the retro Marimekko people know. In his Eastern type, Japan-inspired Seralji Collection, he uses the typical Marimekko patterns, but customises them to fit a younger shape. The ideas he gets for his work come from the environment, the people around him, old photographs, and jazz, and of course Japan. His style as a designer, in his own words, is simple, classic, feminine and a little flirtatious. In his view, a 21st century "Marityttö" has the same qualities as the 1960 Marityttö had, only with a modern twist. Koski's relationship with fashion is very easy and commercial. He claims that Finland has a possibility to do great things in fashion if only people had the courage to take risks.

You can find his interview/pictures of his designs from the following link

Stefan ”the snake in paradise” Lindfors

Stefan Lindfors was born in the city of Mariehamn, Finland in May 3, 1962. He is a Interior architect, Designer and a Sculptor from Finland.
Lindfors’ breakthrough on the international design scene was his lamp “Scaragoo”, introduced at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1988, and manufactured by Ingo Maurer GmbH, Munich. Since then, Lindfors has designed furniture, high-end tableware, lamps, fabrics, fashion, mass produced objects, tiles, wallpaper, jewelry, CD covers, posters, book covers etc., for the Finnish and European industries.
He has received wide critical acclaim around the world from various sources, such as the widely read British newspaper, the Sunday Times. The Times hailed Steffe as follows in aprli 1992, "To describe Stefan Lindfors... as an industrial designer would be like calling a complex Stravinsky symphone a nice song."
Yes, indeed. Stefan is like a child choir singing with only the freckle faced girl singing his angel-like tune through the PA system. The other childs parents wont be happy but its the result that counts.
Just like my politically correct joke aka. bad metaphor, some of his works have been taken with varying opinions. Such as his mission to bring pleasure and art for single women in the same package, ”The snake”(suom. Käärme) a vibrator shaped as a snake (!).
But Lindfors hasnt been the one to shy away from a challenge. So grab Lindfors’ hand and take the tour of your life...

This was just an intro to the exterior of Steffe’s mind. Go deeper and look into the interior if you arent too a scaredy cat...

Elina Järvinen

Elina Järvinen was born in Finland in 1982. She studies furniture design for the final year at the Institute of Design of the Lahti Univrsity of Applied Sciences.
her collection TRE lamps were her first product that have reached manufacturing stage. These TRE lamps were also shown in Milan last spring. In her opinion the lamp has two qualities; it should give light without dazzling and it should be visually pleasing with or without light.
She says she`s interested in designing lamps because light has the power to shape a space, create different moods, show or hide. In her opinion the most importanat element in lamp design is the light, its direction, character and purpose.
Even though she`s at the moment interested in lamp design, she also wants to design other things in the future. Järvinen says that the light should hav several ways of use; it should move and live along with you. The things she design has to be genuine and useful, she also says that it`s good if they have that special silent humour. The TRE lamps are made in Finland, this is also very important for Järvinen.

Eero Aarnio (born1932) studied from 1954 to 1957 at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and started in 1962 with his own office as an interior and industrial designer. He created his break through design the Ball chair (pallotuoli) already 1963, when fiberglass design was still new, and Aarnio´s designs were unheard of.
The Ball Chair was constructed a few years after the design was created. The Ball Chair is created from fiberglass on top of a swiveling metal base and upholstered with foam and fiberfill. The original colors of the chair were: white, red, black and orange.
Aarnio’s designs were a prominent part of the 1960’s pop-culture. This made his works appear in many science fiction productions, where his geometric forms and futuristic materials seemed fitting. Tiia Vanhatapio

Tiia Vanhatapio on kuuluisa suomalainen vaatesuunnittelija, jonka vaatteita on nähty mm. burlesque-tähti Dita Von Teesen päällä.
Tiian viiden vuoden Amerikan reissu on vaikuttanut hänen vaatteiden suunnitteluun.

Saara Lepokorpi

Saara Lepokorpi on 29-vuotias vuoden 2007 Nuori Suunnittelija.

Samu-Jussi Koski was supposed to become a photographer but he didn’t have the time to complete his admission works in time. Instead of becoming a photographer he became a cloth designer. In 2003 he graduated from Lahden Muotoiluinstituutio. During his studies he had a work practise at Marimekko and they asked him to return after his studies.

Samu-Jussi Koski is a 32 year old cloth designer. For the last five years he has been working for Marimekko. Since the spring of 2005 Koski has yearly designed his own line of clothes for Marimekko. Before this he was Ritva Falla’s and Mika Piirainen’s assistant. In addition to working at Marimekko Koski is a actor in a show called Sartsa ja Timppa.

For his spring cloth line Koski made stylish clothes for women and children. In his clothes he combined dark colors, fresh colors and magnificent clothe patterns. The angular shapes are softened by the soft lines of the clothes. In his works it seems as if city life confronts nature. Koski likes comfortable clothes and he feels like designing clothes for children is a more free process than designing for adults.

Koski’s designs are simple, classical, feminine and flirty. He thinks that the best part of his job is when he sees his clothes being appreciated by people. He also likes seeing his own work in the streets of Helsinki. Samu-Jussi Koski begins his work by first thinking about what patterns he will use. The ideas for them come from old photographs, people, jazz music, big cities and tobacco smoke. Now Sami-Jussi Koski has left Finland and Marimekko in order to continue studying in Florence.

Fokus Fabrik is a designer group that was founded in 2005 by four women: Tiia Eronen, Eeva Heikkinen, Laura Järveläinen, and Hanna Kerman. They design mostly just interior fabrics.

Heikkinen and Järveläinen have a master's degree in design from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Eronen and Kerman have a master's degree in design from the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås, Sweden.

Fokus Fabrik's designs are a blend of man-made urban environment and nature. Many of the patterns of their designs are inspired by the little daily things in life.
Sustainability is important for the designers and they are not willing to compromise on ecological thinking. Also contemporary designs are important. Their collections don't have any nostalgia or old traditional designs.

Fokus Fabrik Collection has won a 2008 GOOD DESIGN Award.

Maaru-laseja 1980-luvulta
Kantarelli, Iittala 1956Wirkkala opiskeli vuosina 1933–36 Taideteollisuuskeskuskoulussa, hänen varhaiset veistoksensa olivat mm. sotien jälkeisiä kaatuneiden muistomerkkejä. Vaikka Wirkkala on tunnetuin muotoilijana, hän tutustui jo 1940-luvun lopulla lentokonevaneriin, josta tuli nimenomaan hänen veistostensa päämateriaali.

Tapio Wirkkalan vanhemmat olivat hautausmaa-arkkitehti Ilmari Wirkkala ja Selma Vanhatalo. Hänellä on puolisonsa keramiikkataiteilija Rut Brykin kanssa kaksi lasta Sami (s. 1948) ja Maaria (s. 1954). Poika on sisustusarkkitehti ja tytär taiteilija.

ILMARI TAPIOVAARA (7.syyskuuta 1914-31.tammikuuta 1999)

Tunnetuimpia tuoleja on mm. Domus:

http://www.ilmaritapiovaara.fi/tuotteet_domus.html

Finlandia-talo on saanut kritiikkiä osakseen.

Luovalla lahjakkuudella hyvistä ainesosista on kasautunut Suomen mahtavimpien suunnitelijoiden joukkoon lukeutuva taiteilija.

" Koski's own style as a designer has been described as "feminine and stylish yet flirtatious" but I personally think that his style reflects the beauty in simpicity. This is because of he uses simple colors, shapes and forms in his clothes.

Elissa Aalto, 22.11.1992-12.04.1994, was a Finnish architect and author and the second wife of Alvar Aalto. She graduated as an architect in 1949 in Helsinki. The same year, she got a position in Alvar Aalto's office. She helped Alvar with his work, and quickly gained more and more responsibilities. She has been working with many famous buildings, for example the opera house in Essen, University of Jyväskylä, and a Danish art museum. After her husband's death, she took over the company and continued designing buildings. Because Alvar was a respected and well known architect, a lot of cities wanted to have and repair his buildings. Elissa renovated a number of Alvar's buildings over the years, though it was a painful task because she wanted to pay tribute to her late husband and not change the buildings radically, which some of the cities would have wanted.
